SXSW Hidden Gems, part II
Continuing my hidden gems…
Passion Pit
Oh, the exclusive SPIN party I hear about all the time…I have always wondered why it is THE party of SXSW(well, if you like Perez and all that jazz, you could say the Perez Hilton party is the bomb too, but that’s not really my style). I was on cloud nine at Stubb’s on Friday due to the great line up and free havaiana flip flops. First band I saw at SPIN: Passion Pit. First CD I bought post- SXSW: Passion Pit. They are INCREDIBLE. From Cambridge, MA, they haven’t been around too long but boy have they made a name for themselves. It’s electro-pop /dance vibe like no other. Sounds like they were imported from Britain with American style. I can’t do them justice by writing, so check out their video for Sleepyhead. I wasn’t there but I heard from many sources that at their first show at SXSW they were putting on a comedic, drunken show and not only was it was unforgettable, but really, really good. Apparently the keyboardist spilt beer on half of his keyboard so half of it didn’t work; then, in true fashion, he leaned in to the mic proclaiming, “Well, at least the song is in D” winning over the crowd. Only then did the bassist surprise him with, “It’s actually in C.” Then the high-set electrifying vocalist was swinging the mike around is head like a true rock star and accidentally hit the bassist. Ah, I love it and so did the crowd. Some people may scoff at this, but I find it refreshing: a band that has vulnerability on stage and is still figuring out the ropes - yet has the best sound around.
