AUSTIN, BANDS, MUSINGS

Oops, I let the cat out of the bag… last night there was a secret invite-only show held in Austin at the parish (my fave venue) with jenny and kaki king performing. And believe it or not, Austin is really good at keeping secrets because I didn’t hear a thing about it until my pseudo boyfriend landed me an invite. Converse and Target sponsored the event with the main them being the Wanderlust fest: http://www.wanderlustfestival.com/

These two ladies are two that I have missed at every festival, every tour through town- every time, so this was a treat for me – especially since I was dying to see the Troop Beverly Hills star all grown up. Kaki King was amazing except she would not stop talking about her hair in the humidity. Musically, she reminded me of Gabriela (Rodrigo & Gabriela) as she strummed with the right hand and tapped all over the guitar with the left. And I still don’t know what instrument the guy was playing next to her – my friends and I called it the electric oboe.

Jenny Lewis – you Vegas native, I have a crush. Being the lead singer of Rilo Kiley, she eventually wandered off to do solo endeavros and has inevitably been a guest to acts such as Postal Service and Elvis Costello. Every guy (and girl)was infatuated with her as she played. I can’t believe our little actress turned out to be an indie heartthrob with a killer voice. She’s like Jewel plus Sheryl Crowe except edgy, has a stronger voice and a better spirit. She also has that Zoe Deschanel thing going on with her laid back attitude and nonchalance for stardom. All in all – mystical musicians and laid back harmonies. Perfect.
