Diamond Messages – Liquid Summer

It’s always fun to see just how circumstances affect perception so much. Just yesterday I passed on this record, I recall giving it a half-listening and then brushing it off completely and downloading the next one down on that list of music Hector passed along. In fact, I apparently took the same approach with the next two songs because I had downloaded all the way passed three more songs down the list, after Liquid Summer. (Someone was clearly on a day off yesterday lol.)
So it’s a cold and rainy Saturday night here, in…… What the hell? I’m not in NYC, I’m in L.A. for All Star weekend , but why the hell is it winter here??? Whatever. back to the moment:
I’m pouring some Quaker Natural Granola (oats & honey) into a bowl alongside some tasty Honey Bunches of Oats (honey roasted), with a bit of Silk Pure Almond Vanilla milk, listening to “Liquid Summer” by Diamond Messages as it plays in the background. On repeat, one of the first things I notice is that it starts off with a much tougher and a lot more aggressive of a sound, vibe, and tone than what it ends on and with. Almost completely so much so, that I have to now carefully take a second or maybe third but first real listen, if you catch my drift. This is the second track off of Diamond Messages’ debut Smoke and Mirrors EP.
Listening again, the beginning plays like a playground scene in a sitcom where the bully and the geek face each other eye to eye in the classic 3pm face-off! What we’ll call: “The Bully’s Intro”. This happens right until the high-pitched MIA sounding vocals take place, and then the beat goes off into a great blend of smooth background/spa music that I can hear almost anywhere that has anything to do with sunny old California. As we board our Virgin flights from NYC to LA, on a breezy summer night at Moonshadows or Paradise Cove in Malibu as the sun sets, or on a random summer drive with the top down tearing through PCH. Malibu Vineyards anyone? The vibe completely does it for me here, at this moment, at this time and I like where it has taken me!
They should have named this one a “Late Liquid Summer Afternoon”. This is definitely something I would play as the last song of a late lunch heading into the dinner atmosphere followed by Eliane Elias’s song titled “They Can’t Take That Away” off of her 2008 album – Bossa Nova Stories (something easy to start with if you’re even remotely interested in Brazilian Jazz or Bossa Nova). The vibe is a pleasant mix of light and airy, sounds and tones, that would fuse sweetly, fading out into a more mature and modernly sophisticated evening. The summer fun of California mixed with the refined Madison Ave contrast would make it the perfect progression, but it’s the ambient sounds provided by a record like Liquid Summer that allow us an easy enough platform to be able to even consider them sharing the same space on any play-lists.
Just remember, as one of the many comments on the youtube video for it says, look out for ambient dub step if you like this… more following the white rabbit to come
stay tuned…
